STELLA MEYER

What kind of impression did you get from Hiroshima City? What experiences did you have during the mobile life?

I was genuinely and positively surprised by my experience. Having lived in Tokyo before, I expected something similar a place where it can be difficult to connect with people, where the city feels intense and overwhelming, and where there is little room to slow down or simply be.
Instead, I found myself forming many meaningful connections and friendships. I was able to move through the city with ease, finding moments of calm and openness in everyday life. Spending time in parks, walking through the city, and being surrounded by greenery and nature became an important part of my routine. This balance between urban life and accessible natural spaces made the experience feel grounding and unexpectedly gentle, allowing me to feel at home in a way I hadn?t anticipated.

● 広島市立大学ではどんな勉強をしましたか?
What did you study in Hiroshima City University? How did you like about the lectures at HCU?

I studied applied arts and explored a wide range of crafts, including wood carving and jewelry making with silver and other metals. Alongside this hands-on practice, I took Japanese language classes as well as theoretical courses focusing on Hiroshima?s history and peace studies, which added an important cultural and historical context to my experience.
What I appreciated most were the practical lessons. Working with my hands, learning new techniques, and engaging directly with materials allowed me to fully immerse myself in an unfamiliar field and to approach learning in a very intuitive and embodied way. This experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to think beyond my usual artistic practice.
Being exposed to different crafts, perspectives, and ways of working not only broadened my artistic horizon but also reshaped how I understand my own practice. It opened up new possibilities for combining media, processes, and concepts, and strengthened my desire to work as a multimedia artist who moves fluidly between disciplines. The time I spent studying and working in this context has had a lasting influence on how I approach both making and thinking about art.

● 留学をした感想や、これから広島市立大学への留学を考えている学生にメッセージをお願いします。
Give your comments or advises for future exchange students.

Stay open, friendly, and curious. Don?t hesitate to ask for help, and try to take part in the events that are available, they are a great way to connect with people and feel part of the community. Learning even a little Japanese can make a big difference; it not only helps in everyday situations but also opens doors to meaningful encounters and shared moments. Most of all, approach the experience with curiosity and joy, it will be both helpful and genuinely fun.
